TWO MINUTE SQUAT TEST…

SQUAT3This exercise test is one of the mandatory assessments to be able to get your license as a rider in Norway. It’s one of the best exercises you can do as a rider because it triggers all the right muscles in your legs. If you are able to hold this position for two minutes or longer without moving a muscle you are getting fit and ready to start training a horse. Your legs should be at a ninety degree angle and you can even crunch down and sit in a race position.


Ride with shorter stirrups to make your horse more comfortable and to go faster !

About ten years ago in France, Phillipe Masschaele was the first Monte rider to start riding with short stirrups like the jockeys. This gave him a huge advantage to the others riders and his riding statistics were unbelievable. Now riders all over the world have adopted his style. ADVANTAGE 1: when you ride with short stirrups you are able to move your balance point further back on the horse and get off it’s front end so that the horse doesn’t carry all the weight up front, but more even all over. Look at it like a bike that lifts the front end. This will help the horse stay sounder and keeps the horse balanced and on gait.

ADVANTAGE 2: It also takes your feet away from the horse’s movement so your legs don’t interfere with the horses elbows and legs. The French riders are known to be sitting more short than the rest of the riders in Europe. Their knees don’t even touch the horse’s shoulders, while the rest of the riders put their knees onto the horse’s shoulders. Riding like the French you will find you need more support from the horse’s mouth to steady yourself, that’s when it’s really good to ride with double reins where u can put one of the reins into the horse’s race halter if you ride one that doesn’t grab on enough to help you steady yourself.

So go home and work on your squats to be strong enough to ride with short stirrups to improve your own riding style and make your horse more comfortable and go faster!

USING TWO REINS…

REINSIf you have a horse with a tender mouth put one set of reins on the race halter.

Use this one to support yourself instead of the one in it’s mouth.

With two reins going into the same bit ring you’ll be stronger, plus it will help your balance. Also if the horse seems to be getting on a line it can work a little bit like a head pole!


SQUAT DOWN…

Try and squat down in the saddle as much as you can to get the right seat and balance on the horse
